Renu with MoistureLoc

Renu with MoistureLocIn April 2006, ReNu with MoistureLoc contact lens solution was voluntarily removed from the U.S. market by its manufacturer, Bausch & Lomb.

An investigation into the relation between an outbreak of Fusarium keratitis (a harmful eye infection) and the ReNu solution was immediately conducted by the FDA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In May 2006, there were 106 confirmed cases of fungal keratitis related to the use of ReNu with MoistureLoc in the U.S. alone.
Renu with MoistureLocOn May 11, 2006, representatives from Bausch & Lomb met with the FDA to discuss what the company knew about the relation between its product and Fusarium keratitis. Bausch & Lomb revealed that the chemical formula of ReNu with MoistureLoc makes people more susceptible to contracting the dangerous fungal eye infection.

Officials from the FDA and CDC have reported that the likelihood of a person contracting Fusarium keratitis is higher among users of ReNu with MoistureLoc than among users of other solutions. Based on this fact, Bausch & Lomb has permanently ceased the manufacture and distribution of ReNu with MoistureLoc.

What is Fusarium (fungal) keratitis?
Fusarium keratitis is an inflammation of the cornea, usually caused by bacteria, viruses and fungi. A number of cases of Fusarium keratitis have recently been reported by contact lens wearers who have used Bausch & Lomb's ReNu with MoistureLoc solution. This normally rare disease is highly infectious and can result in temporary blindness and/or permanent damage to the cornea.

In May 2006, there were 106 confirmed cases of fungal keratitis related to the use of ReNu with MoistureLoc in the U.S. alone. At this point, cases have been found in 17 states and in Singapore. Take a look at more statistics concerning ReNu with MoistureLoc and Fusarium keratitis.
